Documentary fine art photography focused on the genres of
Landscape, Architecture, Street and Travel
Landscape...
...photography, to me, is about clearing the mind; immersing yourself in the moment and really observing what’s around you. Allowing yourself time and space to explore; giving the heart and soul a chance to settle and letting creative possibilities reveal themselves.
Story behind the image: we were coming to the end of our walk around the beautiful Loch Muick in Aberdeenshire, Scotland. I noticed this gnarled piece of drift-wood lying in the shallow water at the edge of the loch. It was pointing invitingly across the water to the hills on the far shore.....providing a strong foreground and the perfect lead-in line.

Architecture...
...photography, to me, is about respecting the vision of the architect; admiring the engineering and wondering at the craftsmanship. Finding the right perspective; choosing the perfect composition and showcasing the splendour of the built environment.
Story behind the image: Liverpool's historic waterfront buildings are incredibly photogenic anyway, but with the sunlight illuminating the architectural detail; the near-perfect reflections created by the dark still waters of the canal and the dramatic backdrop of the gathering storm clouds......on this occasion the weather and photography Gods were definitely aligned.

Street...
...photography, to me, is about standing back; observing human nature and anticipating the moment. Finding the perfect view point; blending into the background and looking for the candid opportunity.
Story behind the image: I noticed the couple walking down Steep Hill in the historic city of Lincoln. I waited until they came a bit closer, to a point where their long shadows stretched across the cobbled streets towards me, providing the foreground interest I was after......I kept the shutter speed relatively slow to capture a little blur and movement as they walked.

Travel...
...photography, to me, is about experiencing new cultures; absorbing different customs and capturing the essence of a foreign place. Visiting its historic treasures; seeing its natural wonders and returning home with cherished memories.
Story behind the image: this was our first glimpse of the Taj Mahal near Agra, India. It was framed perfectly by the gatehouse arch, and the crowds who clamoured to get a better view were silhouetted against the sunlit white marble. One of those times where it paid to hang back a little and to make use of the tourists in the composition......capturing both the magnificence and madness of our trip to India.
